Xampla secures $14 million investment

Spinouts

Xampla, one of our portfolio companies, has raised $14 million in Series A funding to accelerate the global rollout of its plant-based Morro™ materials, designed to replace the most polluting single-use plastics.

The round was led by Emerald Technology Ventures, BGF and Matterwave Ventures, with follow-on investment from existing backers including Cambridge Enterprise Ventures, Amadeus Capital Partners and Horizons Ventures.

Cambridge Enterprise is proud to have supported Xampla throughout its journey, as an early investor and continues to back its mission to eliminate plastic pollution through scalable, science-led innovation.

This funding will enable Xampla to replace more than 10 billion units of single-use plastic, including linings found in takeaway boxes, coffee cups and sachets. The company’s Morro™ materials, made from regenerative plant proteins, are plastic-free, biodegradable and home compostable, offering a world-first natural polymer alternative. The investment will also support Xampla’s expansion into Asia Pacific and continued growth across the UK and Europe.

Alexandra continued to outline Xampla’s ambitious plans: “We have proven to investors and to brands that Morro™ materials are the real deal in making plastic a material of the past. Our ambition now is nothing less than to see our products, proudly bearing their Morro marque, become the world’s go-to plastic replacement.”

Xampla’s technology is already being used by major partners including Just Eat Takeaway and Bunzl Catering Supplies, through its partnerships with Huhtamaki, 2M Group of Companies and Transcend Packaging, replacing plastic coatings while maintaining recyclability and barrier performance.

Neil Cameron, a Partner at Emerald Technology Ventures, said:

“Working with Xampla is part of our mission to turbocharge a revolution in innovative packaging. This technology hits the sweet spot I search for: a big solution to a big problem that can reap big rewards. And with its current global traction, there is huge potential to scale even further.”

Ines Kolmsee, a Partner at Matterwave Ventures, added:

“Xampla’s mission fully aligns with ours: they are tackling a major sustainability issue with smart technology that can be used in existing equipment, making it both easy to adopt and capital efficient.  They have got their product out of the lab and into the market.  It is a remarkable achievement and I know they will now go from strength to strength.”

Our Head of Ventures, Christine Martin, also added:

“This funding round is a strong endorsement of Xampla’s breakthrough technology and the scale of its potential impact. We’re proud to have supported them and excited to see Morro™ materials replacing billions of units of single-use plastic in the future.”

Xampla is also commercialising Morro™ films, which are soluble and food-safe, with potential to replace plastic PVA films in dishwasher tablets, laundry pods and single-serve food packaging.

We are delighted to see Xampla reach this milestone, which not only highlights the strength of their technology but also reinforces the vital role sustainable innovation plays in addressing global environmental challenges.
