What drives investors, the criteria by which they are judged and assessed, and what budding entrepreneurs need to do to ensure they are pitching for funding to the right place at the right time are the subjects of this week’s Enterprise Tuesday talk, which takes place at the Department of Engineering this evening.
This week’s speakers are Jamie Urquhart, Venture Partner, Pond Venture Partners, and CfEL Entrepreneur in Residence and Margaret Heffernan, Entrepreneur, Chief Executive and Author. The two will talk about getting investment and understanding funding methods.
Jamie Urquhart is a Venture Partner with Pond Venture Partners, investors in early stage European companies in the semiconductor, communication, wireless and software areas. He has a BSc from Bath University in Physical Electronics and started his career in analogue and digital chip design at Plessey Research (Caswell), who had part-funded his degree.
Jamie was part of the founding team of ARM Holdings from its inception in November 1990 until November 2002. At ARM he undertook a number of roles, including Chief Operating Officer when the company floated on NASDAQ and the LSE, and latterly Chief Strategy Officer, enjoying developing people and motivating teams.
After ARM he was an angel investor, before joining Pond Venture Partners as a Venture Partner, and he has experience of working with public companies and start-ups in both operational roles and as a non-executive director. Jamie is a Fellow of the IET.
Margaret Heffernan produced radio and television programmes for the BBC for 13 years. She then moved to the US where she spearheaded multimedia productions for Intuit, The Learning Company and Standard&Poors. She was Chief Executive of InfoMation Corporation, ZineZone Corporation and then iCast Corporation, was named one of the “Top 25” by Streaming Media magazine and one of the “Top 100 Media Executives” by The Hollywood Reporter.
Margaret now lives in the UK and writes a regular column for Real Business magazine and blogs for BNET and The Huffington Post. She is a Visiting Professor at the University of Bath and at Simmons College School of Management and an Executive in Residence at Babson College. She has published two books about women and business: The Naked Truth: A Working Woman’s Manifesto (Wiley, 2004) and Women on Top: How Women are Changing the Rules for Business Success (Viking 2007). Her new book, Willful Blindness, will be available for purchase at this evening’s event.
Enterprise Tuesday is a series of lectures and networking sessions on entrepreneurial themes, managed and delivered by Cambridge Judge Business School’s Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning (CfEL), which runs from October to February each year. It is currently free to attend and open to the wider community.
This evening’s lecture begins at 6pm and takes place in Lecture Theatre 0 at the Department of Engineering.
