From Idea to Impact: A bitesize introduction to the commercialisation journey

This session introduces the commercialisation journey, from a first idea or innovation, through the development of a product or service and its delivery to market via the creation of a new venture or via licence to industry.

We touch on the basics of intellectual property and its importance for commercialisation and use case studies primarily from STEM fields to show how commercialisation can enable a project to scale into commercial success and societal impact.

Learning objectives:

  • Understand difference types of intellectual property and how they can be protected and exploited
  • Understand the process of validating a new research idea to understand its commercial value
  • Understand the different routes (spinout companies, licensing) which can be taken to bring research innovations to the market
  • Understand what motivates researchers and their institutions to use commercial routes to create societal impact

Above all, this is a chance to connect with a community of like-minded individuals who are exploring how to turn their work into something that benefits society, with the tools and guidance to help make it happen.
