Advancing net-zero material discovery

Green Impact

Material extraction and processing is a major contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions. This is especially true for materials which underpin the technologies we rely on to green our economy, including electric vehicles, and wind turbines.

Materials Nexus (trading as Matnex) is using AI to make superior materials faster than ever before.

By harnessing the accuracy of leading material modelling techniques and the speed of machine learning models, Matnex is able to rapidly design and create new materials that solve performance, cost, and environmental issues.

Discovering sustainable materials with AI and quantum mechanics

Matnex is a pioneering deep-tech AI and quantum mechanics company that uses AI to transform the way new materials are discovered and designed, radically accelerating the processes from ideation to commercialisation. Co-founded by CEO Dr Jonathan Bean and CTO Dr Robert Forrest from the Department of Materials Science & Metallurgy, Matnex’s techniques can be applied to both novel and existing materials, creating opportunities to innovate and optimise commercial products.

“We’re revolutionising materials discovery, replacing the expensive, decades-long, status quo with our AI and quantum mechanics-powered approach to deliver rapid, cost-effective innovation, enabling the sustainable future that we urgently need, and may otherwise never see.”

The Cambridge spinout focuses on net-zero technologies, including renewable energy generation, energy storage, transport, and sustainable computing, to deliver higher performance and sustainability at lower costs.

“Our mission is simple – to discover more sustainable materials which governments and companies can use to build green technologies, in a way that’s commercially viable.”

In 2023, Matnex announced the close of a £2 million seed round led by Ada Ventures with participation from Cambridge Enterprise Ventures, National Security specialists MD One Ventures, as well as angel investors Andrew MacKay and Jasmin Thomas. This investment will help Matnex roll out its groundbreaking AI and quantum mechanics technology, helping to fast-track the discovery and development of sustainable, cheaper, higher-performing materials.
