Fluidic Analytics has developed a proprietary technology to characterise proteins in a rapid, accurate and cost-effective manner. The technology is based on research conducted at the University of Cambridge and has high-value applications including identifying markers that indicate the onset of diseases in the human body.

The technology comprises a reader and disposable chip and takes a single drop of sample to analyse for proteins, biological molecules that do most of the work in managing the structure and smooth running of bodily tissues that can also act as a signal that something is going wrong.

Research into ‘proteomics’ is still in its early days, and Fluidic Analytics is still developing its first product. It has raised £1.56 million in a Series A financing led by Cambridge Enterprise and includes DFJ Esprit, IQ Capital, Parkwalk Advisors and Amadeus Capital Partners as co-investors.

Protein molecules are fiendishly complex, with behaviour that depends on factors such as chemical composition, structure and electrical charge. Currently, researchers are forced to base their analysis on many prior assumptions about how combinations of these characteristics relate to underlying diseases, because their tools cannot capture sufficiently large amounts of information.

In contrast to DNA, whose sequence provides information on the likelihood of developing a disease at some point in life, proteins provide real-time information on the actual, current disease state of the body. Real-time information on disease states is widely seen as the key to timely, effective medical treatment. The global market for protein-based medical-diagnostic tools exceeds three billion dollars annually.

Fluidic Analytics was founded in 2013 by Dr Tuomas Knowles of the University’s Department of Chemistry. The company’s executive team is headed by serial entrepreneur Andrew Lynn, who previously led University spin-outs Orthomimetics and CamGaN to acquisitions in 2009 and 2012, respectively. Experienced life-sciences financier and director Anthony Colletta chairs the board of directors, which also includes Cambridge Enterprise Life Sciences investment lead Bradley Hardiman.

Vishal Gulati will join the Fluidic Analytics Board of Directors. Advisors for this transaction were Bracher Rawlins LLP, Confluence Tax LLP and Taylor Vinters LLP.

The business strategy will be to develop different iterations of the product. More ambitious applications, such as real time self-testing, would require time and tough conversations among doctors, regulators and society.

Before that, however, the company plans to fund research into versions for doctors – and later, consumers – by marketing to labs, with the first product on sale next year.
