PVCC 2026 semi-finalists

IE Cambridge

Announcing the semi-finalists of the 2026 Postdoc Venture Creation Challenge (PVCC), a competition designed to help University of Cambridge postdocs take their first steps in transforming research into real-world ventures.

The challenge welcomes innovative ideas across deep tech, life sciences, AI, software and social impact. More than a competition the PVCC, provides workshops, mentoring and an incredible launchpad for early-stage ideas.

Applicants impress with opportunities to create impact

This year’s application window began in April, supported by workshops that focused on mapping technologies to real customer needs. The semi-finalists were announced on 30 July after a challenging review of all the applications.

Director of IE Cambridge, Helen Alexander noted:

“What I’ve noticed looking through all the applications is a shared driver to improve lives and society.”

More than just a competition

Delivered by IE Cambridge, the PVCC brings together partners from across the ecosystem to support Cambridge’s incredible postdoc community including Cambridge Enterprise, the Postdoc Academy and Cambridge Innovation Capital. The PVCC provides workshop support, a summer accelerator bootcamp, mentorship and pitch training, culminating in a Grand Finale in November.

The PVCC builds on the success of the Chris Abell Postdoc Business Plan Competition which helped the emergence of game-changing companies such as Nu Quantum, RoboK, Semarion, 52 North, Xampla, Cambridge GaN Devices, Aetosense and Versed AI. Previous winners have gone on to raise £172M in investment.

Dr Christine Martin continued:

“Seeing the postdocs grow in confidence and refine their ideas throughout the programme is incredibly rewarding and there’s every chance that some of these ventures will go on to become companies we invest in and support.”

Setting sights on the Grand Finale in November

The intention of the competition is to support the greatest number of innovators to develop their ventures. Over the next six weeks, the semi-finalists will be matched with mentors and then take part in the Summer Accelerator before finalists are announced in October. The finalists will go on to pitch at the Grand Finale where the winner will secure a £20,000 investment from Cambridge Enterprise Ventures. There is also a second prize of £10,000 from CIC and an audience prize of £2,000 from IE Cambridge.

We are grateful to our supportive sponsors for making this competition possible: HSBC Innovation Banking, PEM and Mishcon de Reya.
