Creative Cambridge explores collaboration and innovation between university research and the creative and cultural industries.
Our 2024 event included inspirational panels, demos, pitches and of course conversation designed to spark new ideas and foster new relationships across Cambridge’s creative communities.
We were joined by a wonderful mix of academic researchers, innovators, artists and creatives, students, local businesses, cultural institutions, and representatives from the funders and networks who support the creative economy in Cambridge.

Panel One - Creating Realities: Perspectives on World Building
Our first panel featured experts that meet at the intersections of novel technology, arts, and research in world building, and together we thought about what creative possibilities emerge through the art of shaping shared realities and experiences.
Lawrence Grabowski, CEO & Co-Founder of Chaotic Works
Lara Mani, Senior Research Associate, Centre for the Study of Existential Risk
Melanie Smith, Head of Operations at the Design Age Institute & Founder of Modern Renaissance Woman
Sam Sully, CEO at Planetary Processing

Panel 2 - Make Play Work: Creativity in Collaboration
UCAM Shape Hub is an initiative that brings together researchers and artists, encouraging collaboration and experimentation to create unexpected outcomes. Facilitated by Collusion, the hub's current programme aims to build up new capacities and confidence in both researchers and creatives, especially when exploring the possibilities of digital arts as a means of engagement, enquiry and expression alongside conventional research methods. We heard from speakers connected to three projects, with reflections on their creative experimentation and its impact.
Lucy Sheerman (Chair) Impact Facilitator, AHRC Impact Acceleration Account (IAA)
Rachel Drury, Executive Director & Co-Founder, Collusion
Anna Brownsted, Artist
Bettina Varwig, Professor of Music History, University of Cambridge
Matt Brudenell, Director of the Cambridge Archaeological Unit

Panel 3: Genius of the Place - Cambridge's Creative Promise
Our third panel provoked discussion on opportunities for collaboration between culture and innovation, between Create Cambridge and Innovate Cambridge, and how this might create a new sense of place and identity for the city.
