We are delighted to announce the finalists of our 2016 Cambridge Postdoc Enterprise Competition.

It has been another year of high calibre submissions. As a result the judges elected to send five business plans through to the final round. The postdoctoral researchers, and their affiliations, are:

Maximilian Bock, Architectural Engineering, Department of Architecture

Giorgio Divitini, Electron Microscopy Group, Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy

Giorgia Longobardi, Electronics, Power and Energy Conversion, Department of Engineering

Myriam Marie Ouberaï, Nanoscience Centre, Department of Engineering

Liang Wang, Big Data, Computer Laboratory

The grand finale will be held on Thursday 27 October when the finalists will pitch their business plans in front of an audience of experts in spin-out investment. If you’re a postdoc and would like to attend, you can register for the event here.

The judges include members of Cambridge Enterprise, the Entrepreneurial Postdocs of Cambridge and The Coca-Cola Company, plus John Lee and Andy Sandham, both highly experienced investors. The finalists’ pitches will be judged on a number of criteria, including each business’s competitive position, the potential for new business creation and the teams’ collective skill set.

The event is sponsored by Holben Holt Limited, a Cambridge based private capital investment company.

Up to three prizes in total will be awarded. Cambridge Enterprise will award two prizes for the main competition: £20k investment for first place and £10k investment for second place. Another prize, of £7.5k cash, will be given by Coca-Cola. The top winner will have the opportunity to pitch to investors at one of our Cambridge Enterprise Venture Partners dinners.

If you entered but didn’t make it through to the finals, we hope you have learned from your mentors and that the process has helped you in your quest for commercialisation.

Congratulations to all the finalists. We’ll see you at the grand finale. Good luck!
