Dr Christine Martin is the Head of Ventures at Cambridge Enterprise.

The Cambridge Enterprise Ventures team are responsible for venture investing University of Cambridge funds into University of Cambridge spin-outs. The team invest in opportunities across the breadth of University research including quantum, silicon, sustainability, AI, med tech and drug discovery.

Christine’s background is in Life Science investment with a focus on drug discovery. She has supported numerous University of Cambridge spin-outs, including Carrick, Pretzel, Transition Bio, Z-factor, PhoreMost, Qkine, Spirea and Pharmenable.

With a degree and D. Phil in Chemistry from the University of Oxford, prior to becoming an investor, Christine had roles managing licensing of University intellectual property and before that working for a biotechnology spin-out from the University of Cambridge.

Miles is leading Deeptech Labs, a deeptech accelerator founded with the University of Cambridge, Arm, Cambridge Innovation Capital, Martlet and Ewan Kirk. Deeptech Labs helps companies commercialise new technologies and makes seed investments alongside the accelerator.

Miles is an International Venture Capitalist with experience in the US and Europe in Financial and Corporate venture investing. He set up and co-managed the €150m AV8 Ventures fund and ran Qualcomm’s Venture Capital group in Europe. He also started and ran an incubator at Qualcomm in California and formed and managed the Machine Learning, Augmented Reality and Wireless Charging programs. He holds an MBA from University of California, Irvine and BEng in Electronics and Communication Engineering from University of Bristol, UK.

As a Partner at Cambridge Innovation Capital, Ian focuses on technology investments.

Before joining CIC Ian was a Director at Unilever Ventures in London, where he led all B2B/Technology investments.

Over 11 years he was responsible for numerous transactions across Europe and North America, including investments into Olapic (acquired by Monotype Inc), Mirakl, Aera Technology, Skupos, WeGift, Celtra (acquired by STG), CreatorIQ, Mirriad (Listed on AIM) and Blis Global (acquired by LDC).

As Head of Ecosystem Initiatives and Partnerships, Caroline leads on a number of strategic activities designed to support entrepreneurship and innovation.

Delivering the company’s convening agenda, the activity is about connecting two pivotal ecosystems – the University and the wider Cambridge ecosystem – in a proactive and strategic way that drives entrepreneurship and innovation. Cambridge Enterprise sits as a bridge between these ecosystems – intrinsically linked to both – and this activity helps to shape and support emerging entrepreneurs, spin-outs and start-ups and the companies who are forging the innovation landscape of Cambridge for the future.

Caroline works closely with the Innovate Cambridge initiative helping to create an inclusive, ambitious and broad-ranging innovation vision for the Greater Cambridge area; the University Enterprise Network which helps convene all of the University’s activities for entrepreneurship and innovation; the ideaSpace community and network bringing together Cambridge founders; and International Outreach which enables us to share our experience and expertise around the globe

Driving the cement industry to zero carbon production. 

Concrete is the second most used material on earth, behind only water. Cement is the binding agent used in concrete, and its production is responsible for 8% of global CO2 emissions. Cambridge Electric Cement (CEC) has developed a technology for recovering and reusing cement from demolition waste making zero carbon cement a possibility.

They have demonstrated that recovered cement paste is a viable substitute for the flux used in steelmaking. Rather than producing a waste slag, our process outputs “clinker” (the material produced by conventional cement kilns). The steelmaking process is unaffected and production costs are reduced.
