Cambridge Enterprise is looking for a Commercialisation Associate to join the Research Tools team.  This is a fast-paced and varied role and provides the opportunity to develop a broad knowledge of commercialisation approaches. Commercialisation Associate (Research Tools)

Salary from £36,000  depending on experience.

This is a full-time role based at the University’s West Cambridge site at the Hauser forum and will ideally be office-based for 3 days per week (or more if preferred).

Sitting at the heart of Europe’s most successful innovation cluster, Cambridge Enterprise is the commercialisation arm of the University of Cambridge. Our mission is to help University of Cambridge innovators, experts and entrepreneurs make their ideas and concepts more commercially successful for the benefit of society, the UK economy and the University. We do this by supporting academic staff and students in licensing their inventions, creating and funding new companies, and providing consultancy services to industry, government and others.

 

The Research Tools Team is critical to this mission and manages a diverse portfolio of technology that is created by University of Cambridge academics in the process of their research that can be directly licenced out.  This includes reagents, software, copyright, confidential information and database rights, and are often ready to be licensed without further development. These tools can be licensed to companies for internal research use, as part of a product or for commercial distribution.

 

The Commercialisation Associate role involves licensing a broad range of research tools from the University of Cambridge and includes responsibility for leading the licensing activities for a number of unique tools within the portfolio. Duties include maintaining and building relationships with key academics, negotiating terms with external and internal clients, drafting contracts, monitoring projects, fulfilling licensing requests through the newly launched licensing platform, supporting the relationship between internal and external clients and helping to assess and develop new opportunities for the Research Tools portfolio.

This role also involves facilitating consultancy projects between University staff and external organisations that are directly relate to the Research Tools within our portfolio. As such, this role provides the opportunity to work with a wide range of customers including national and international companies of all sizes, governments and charities and help support University staff across all disciplines, including Life Science, Physical Science and Arts, Humanities and Social Science.

 

Your Skills:

Ideally you will have a strong scientific background in a life science, educated to PhD level in a life science discipline.  In addition, ideally you will have experience in a commercial, legal or research environment with an interest in entrepreneurship and managing and commercialisation of research. Perhaps you already have knowledge of the sector, for example: licensing, or other aspects of technology transfer, and/or experience in a commercial environment.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, well-organised candidate who has excellent communication skills and thrives in a fast-paced and high turnover environment.  You will have the ability to prioritise and to handle several projects in parallel, while maintaining an active customer focus. Experience of handling and/or negotiating commercial contracts would be a real advantage but training will be provided.
