The Carbon Challenge – Ideas Jam

by Cambridge Zero, Carbon13, Cambridge Enterprise and Energy IRC

Are you a creative problem solver who cares about the environment? This ideas jam is your opportunity to meet other students, staff and industry experts interested in the Carbon Challenge!

The Ideas Jam will include an opportunity to hear from industry and academic experts from across the university and beyond, followed by the opportunity to brainstorm with other participants in a structured way to help you come up with ideas and find team mates. The line-up includes:

• Professor Hugh Hunt – Cambridge expert in renewable energy and geoengineering and the deputy director for Cambridge’s Centre for Climate Repair.

• Peter Comiskey – Director of Application Engineering at the Green Electronics Company GaN Devices, an entrepreneurial spin out from Cambridge University. Peter has more than 25 years of experience in the design and development of power electronics.

• Doctor Cristina Peñasco – University lecturer in public policy and affiliated with both the Centre for Environment, Energy and Natural Resource Governance and the Bennett Institute for Public Policy. The go-to person for economics and policy on renewable energy and eco innovation!

These speakers will then remain on hand to offer advice and encouragement alongside a group of competition mentors from Cambridge Zero and Carbon13. Breakout groups will grant participants time with experts and mentors, and the opportunity to brainstorm in a structured way on a variety of topics! Mentors will help you find an impactful idea if you’re unsure of one or give your reassurance and guidance you’re heading in the right direction if you already have some ideas! Numerous breaks are included in the schedule so you can refuel with a cup of tea!

This is your opportunity to meet like-minded people passionate about the same cause as you from across the university, in industry and beyond! Following the Ideas Jam, the pub social on Thursday 27/1/22 at 7pm will give you the opportunity to meet and form your teams with other participants!

More about The Carbon Challenge:

The Carbon Challenge, run by Cambridge Zero in partnership with Carbon13, Cambridge Enterprise and Energy IRC, invites small teams of postgraduates and postdoctoral researchers to submit early-stage proposals to facilitate or accelerate energy transitions which affect us almost every day. These can include how we travel, eat, use power and spend and invest money. The challenge empowers you to find, develop and collaborate on ideas which help tackle the climate crisis and drive positive change!

Participants don’t need to be seasoned entrepreneurs – participation in the project is designed to help you feel more confident in the entrepreneurial space with the potential to translate into a business opportunity.
