Diarmuid comes to Cambridge Enterprise from his role as Chief Innovation & Enterprise Officer at Trinity College Dublin, where he had overall responsibility for the development and enhancement of the college’s innovation and enterprise strategy.
Prior to this, Diarmuid was Director of Trinity Research and Innovation with responsibility for both the Research Development Office and the Office of Corporate Partnership and Knowledge Exchange. In that role he led the establishment of the University Bridge venture fund, which is ranked in the world’s top five collaborative university funds, according to Global University Venturing.
While at Trinity, Diarmuid was also the Executive Director of CRANN, an internationally recognised centre of excellence for nanotechnology and materials science research.
He has held senior management roles in several university-founded start-up companies, including NTera, Xoliox, and Deerac Fluidics.
Diarmuid was a Research Fellow at Princeton University. He has a PhD in Physics from the University of Sheffield and a degree in Materials Science from Trinity College Dublin. He joined Cambridge Enterprise in August 2021.
Paul is Deputy Director of Cambridge Enterprise. He is responsible for implementing a five year strategy that aims to enhance our customer service so that we can help more academics, researchers, companies and investors to create a positive impact on society. A cornerstone of the strategy is the introduction of a new IT system that will enable customers to access data as well as driving greater efficiency within the business.
Paul was previously Head of Consultancy Services for six years, during which period he doubled the team’s turnover. He is a Board member and Director of three University of Cambridge subsidiary companies: Cambridge Enterprise Limited, Cambridge University Technical Services (CUTS) Limited and Institute for Manufacturing Education and Consultancy Services Limited.
Paul has considerable experience of technology transfer in both the biotech and medtech sectors. He was previously Head of Business Development at Health Enterprise East, where he was instrumental in building a successful technology transfer and consultancy organisation for the NHS. Before that, he was a Technology Manager at Cambridge Enterprise for more than three years and led its Life Sciences team. Paul also spent five years as a Senior Scientist with a Cambridge biotech company that had spun out of the University, helping it to develop its medtech business.
Paul has a degree in Biochemistry and a PhD in Chemistry from Manchester. After his PhD, he became a post-doctoral researcher for the Medical Research Council and then later for the University of Cambridge.
Paul first joined Cambridge Enterprise in 2001 and returned after he completed his time with Health Enterprise East in 2009.
Boris is responsible for the Business Support team and for information analysis and reporting.
He oversees project developments and the IP portfolio management system, as well as related processes and management information reporting.
Prior to his current post, Boris held several roles at Cambridge Enterprise including Business Support Manager and Senior Technology Associate in the Life Sciences team.
Before joining Cambridge Enterprise, Boris worked as a research associate for an international executive search consultancy providing senior manager and executive recruitment services to the life science and healthcare industries.
Boris has an MSc in Biology from the University of Montpellier (France) and Level 5 Award in Management from the Institute of Leadership and Management.
Boris joined the Technology Transfer Office of the University (which became Cambridge Enterprise in 2006) in September 2003.
Gerard Grech is the Managing Director of Founders at the University of Cambridge, a new strategic initiative focused on accelerating the formation and scaling of new technology companies. He is the former founding Chief Executive of Tech Nation, a pioneering UK Government-backed initiative that shaped Europe’s most productive digital ecosystem. Tech Nation fuelled a 5x increase in the number of UK cities with a tech unicorn or more and secured the UK’s digital leadership position in Europe. Tech Nation was the 9th fastest growing technology company in the UK public sector in 2022 before being acquired by the Founders Forum Group.
Gerard is also a member of the UK Government’s Digital Economy Council and the World Economic Forum’s Digital Board. Previously, he worked at the intersection of mobile, digital media and venture capital in New York, London and Paris in senior leadership roles at Orange, France Telecom, Nokia and Nokia Growth Partners, among others. He started his career in the music business.
As Head of Ecosystem Initiatives and Partnerships, Caroline leads on a number of strategic activities designed to support entrepreneurship and innovation.
Delivering the company’s convening agenda, the activity is about connecting two pivotal ecosystems – the University and the wider Cambridge ecosystem – in a proactive and strategic way that drives entrepreneurship and innovation. Cambridge Enterprise sits as a bridge between these ecosystems – intrinsically linked to both – and this activity helps to shape and support emerging entrepreneurs, spin-outs and start-ups and the companies who are forging the innovation landscape of Cambridge for the future.
Caroline works closely with the Innovate Cambridge initiative helping to create an inclusive, ambitious and broad-ranging innovation vision for the Greater Cambridge area; the University Enterprise Network which helps convene all of the University’s activities for entrepreneurship and innovation; the ideaSpace community and network bringing together Cambridge founders; and International Outreach which enables us to share our experience and expertise around the globe.
Caroline joins from her previous role as CEO for Allia Future Business Centres Ltd where she established an initial innovation and incubation centre for social ventures and ‘tech for good’ companies and built out a network of four centres operating across Cambridge, London and Peterborough. Caroline has spent over 20 years working with entrepreneurship and innovation in and around Cambridge and is well networked in the Cambridge ecosystem. She brings this, as well as previous experience working in a research, development and commercialisation department of a UK University, to ensure that international partners benefit from the richest experience of engagement.
Caroline is a Fellow of the RSA.
Caroline joined Cambridge Enterprise in March 2020.
As Head of Seed Funds, Christine oversees our investment activities, with the team investing over £5 million each year in young companies.
With expertise in Life Science investment, Christine has a focus on drug discovery with a broad portfolio of technologies, including University of Cambridge spin-outs Carrick, STORM, Z-factor, PhoreMost, Qkine, and PolyProX. Christine was featured in BioBeat’s 50 Movers and Shakers in BioBusiness 2018.
Previously, Christine worked for six years in the Life Sciences Tech Transfer team managing licensing of University IP. Christine also managed the University of Cambridge-GSK open innovation drug discovery initiative based at the SBC, working closely with academics to gain funding to develop translational projects.
Prior to that, she enjoyed 11 years working for Biotica, a biotechnology spin-out from the University of Cambridge as Department Director and Project Leader.
Christine has an MA and DPhil from the University of Oxford. She is the author of over 20 peer reviewed journal articles and over 20 patents. She was also the recipient of the Arthur E. Schwarting award for the best article published in the Journal of Natural Products in 2006.
Christine joined Cambridge Enterprise in September 2011.
As Chief Financial Officer, Sam manages the finance department and has overall responsibility for quarterly reporting, compliance, budgeting and statutory reporting. In addition, Sam is heavily involved in the long-term strategic positioning and reporting for Cambridge Enterprise, and is Company Secretary for both Cambridge Enterprise and Cambridge University Technical Services.
Before joining Cambridge Enterprise in January 2023, Sam worked for Cambridge University Press and Assessment as the Finance Director for their Academic Publishing division. Prior to that Sam worked in the Entrepreneurial Business department of a large professional services firm providing accounting, audit and tax services to owner managed businesses.
Sam is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (FCCA).
Iain is Interim Head of Technology Transfer at Cambridge Enterprise. He is also Head of Life Sciences at Cambridge Enterprise, responsible for a team that is working across the life sciences sector from human health therapeutics to agritech and research tools. Iain has a PhD in Organic Chemistry (Sydney) and MBA (Cambridge).
The team has spun-out companies including X01 Therapeutics, Apcintex (now a Centessa company), DIOSynVax, NoBACZ Healthcare, Predictimmune Limited, PhoreMost, Z-factor and Cambridge Epigenetix. Iain, with colleagues from partner universities founded Apollo Therapeutics, a £40 million fund in early stage drug development and launched the Ceres Agritech Knowledge Exchange Partnership. Iain also led discussions with GSK in respect of the University of Cambridge-GSK open innovation drug discovery initiative based at the Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst.
Iain joined Cambridge Enterprise in November 2003.
Leading the marketing and communications team, Joanna is responsible for the strategic marketing, communications, brand and promotion of Cambridge Enterprise.
Prior to joining Cambridge Enterprise in 2004, Joanna worked in the financial services sector.
Joanna is a Chartered Marketer, a Member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and a Member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations.
As CTO, Matt’s role involves leading the IT team, working with Cambridge Enterprise strategic project groups to provide expertise, support and advice on their IT requirements, developing the IT strategy, and researching, recommending and project managing new IT technology solutions, thus helping Cambridge Enterprise engage with its customers, streamline business processes, and allow staff to be more effective.
Graduating from Cambridge in Engineering, Matt followed a career in web design and development, then enterprise applications and finally the full IT portfolio, working for many years in the media sector (Emap plc and The Guardian), but more recently a Tennessee software company and Cambridgeshire County Council.
Matt is a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute, having completed a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) at Anglia Ruskin University, and also attained Chartered IT Professional (CITP) status whilst studying IT Leadership at Cranfield University.
Matt joined Cambridge Enterprise in January 2019.
Leading the people and office teams at Cambridge Enterprise, Michelle is responsible for developing and delivering strategic initiatives that support the wider business goals and ensuring that Cambridge Enterprise is legally compliant in all HR matters. In addition, Michelle oversees the recruitment, development, and retention of employees and is responsible for maintaining a culture of growth, innovation, and collaboration.
Before joining Cambridge Enterprise, Michelle worked in Tech for Good start-ups, most recently as Head of People at birdie Care. Prior to that, Michelle spent over 12 years working in the financial services sector, most notably at globally renowned institutions such as Advent International, BlueBay Asset Management and Tennenbaum Capital Partners (now BlackRock TCP Capital Corp). Michelle’s background spans across Human Resources, Operations, and Marketing & Investor Relations, which has given her a well-rounded view of the operating needs of a company.
Michelle is a member of the Chartered Institute for Professional Development (CIPD) and holds an MPhil in Sociology from the University of Cambridge.
Michelle joined Cambridge Enterprise in April 2023.
Amanda is Head of Consultancy Services and Research Tools, a fast-growing service dedicated to generating both societal and economic impact from academic research by facilitating consultancy between University academics from across all disciplines within the University and external organisations.
The Consultancy Services team has supported almost 400 consultancy projects this past year of which many arose from Arts, Humanities or Social Science disciplines. In 2017-18, Amanda’s team saw a 63% increase in the number of new consultants with deals signed for 165 academics and 234 clients in that period.
Amanda periodically delivers training to technology transfer professionals for PraxisAuril, the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM) and the European Association for Technology Transfer Professionals (ASTP), and is on the Board of Directors for ASTP as VP for Professional Development.
Amanda previously worked for the University of Nottingham’s School of Pharmacy, where she ran a newly created interdisciplinary Doctoral Training Centre. As Project Manager, she co-ordinated the PhD programme and brought together academics and industry to generate collaborative research projects in targeted therapeutics as well as running a government-funded project to develop researchers’ transferable skills. She has also worked for the Food Standards Agency in scientific policy and for Isis Research (now known as Synovate Healthcare) where she was responsible for planning, implementing and analysing large international studies on HIV therapy for the pharmaceutical industry.
Amanda has a PhD in HIV research from the MRC-Laboratory of Molecular Biology at the University of Cambridge.
Amanda joined Cambridge Enterprise as Consultancy Associate in January 2008 and became Head of Consultancy in February 2015.
Tom is Head of the Technology Investment Fund (TIF) at Cambridge Enterprise.
Prior to joining Cambridge Enterprise, he spent more than 10 years at PA Consulting where he led the Life Science Technology Strategy and Product Development teams. During this time, he advised businesses from early-stage translational companies to global corporations on the evaluation of new commercialisation and market opportunities for novel technologies. Tom has brought a number of technologies to market and has experience working across the full product development life cycle, with deep expertise in medical devices, diagnostics and advanced therapeutics.
Tom has a PhD in Molecular Genetics from the University of Exeter, where he worked on characterising effector protein delivery and cell biology of host-pathogen interactions.
Tom joined the Cambridge Enterprise team in November 2023.
